As Olimar explores the planet, he learns of its many hazards, and in turn the usefulness and adaptability of the Pikmin themselves. Each colour of Pikmin has its own corresponding element that it can withstand - Red Pikmin are immune to fire, Blue Pikmin can breathe underwater, and Yellow Pikmin can... handle bombs.
Not only are they adept at fighting off the local predators, the Pikmin prove useful at clearing obstacles such as walls and bridges with their strong stalks. The Pikmin that can carry bombs are able to clear the tough stone walls that other Pikmin can't beat down with their stalks. Some of Olimar's ship parts are stranded on ledges, in lakes, behind walls, and even got swallowed up by larger creatures... it'll take a lot of work to get them all back in time.

"It appears that many of my ship's parts have landed in this region. If I can just recover the parts of my radar, I should be able to use my radar screen. How that would improve my chances! Then I'd only have to press the radar button on my suit to locate my parts."

"I now add yellow Pikmin to my list of discoveries. These creatures can wield bomb-rocks, so perhaps I can use them to blast down rock walls and open up new regions. Red and yellow Pikmin, as well as bomb-rock carriers, break into squads when dismissed, or when I grab one for a moment."

"When I see the Pikmin engaged in fierce battle with the other creatures of this world, I often grow uneasy wondering why they never attack me... Could it be that they actually view me as a parental figure? A strange, disturbing thought..."

"With its newly increased functions, the Dolphin now lifts higher into this planet's atmosphere. I see a great depression in the woods beneath me—it looks like a belly button in this vast forest. Now that my ship is more stable, I should be able to set it down there."
